This brought to us by Facebook friend and darling Organic Diva, Ally Shapiro. For those of you who are not following "The Housewives of NYC" (we ask why, darling, why?), Ally is the daughter of Jill Kamen Zarin and Bobby Zarin (the entertaining New Yorkers we love to watch every Tuesday night on Bravo).
It seems that Shapiro does not just have a huge heart but a huge soul as well. We recently learned of Ally's efforts (and that of other teens across the country) to green their proms. Project Green Prom is a challenge to engage high schoolers across the country in greening their proms and prom preparations. Development and Program Director of "Teens Turning Green," Lisa Wertheim explains, "By making thoughtful decisions and informed purchases for prom season, we strive to engage teens in an all-encompassing eco-lifestyle. We've chosen to focus on prom as there are many changes that can be made to approach this right of passage from a more sustainable approach. Beginning with greener alternatives on hair, make-up, body care products and extending to include prom attire and accessories, decor, transportation and flowers, our goal is to inspire teens across the country to action that will sustain their health and that of the planet."
A fun twist to the Project Green Prom is a video contest. Teens should forward three-minute videos of their efforts to green their proms by March 30, 2009. One winner will receive a trip for two to New York, a a one-of-a-kind Eco Prom dress by Bahar Shahpar and Eco Prom shoes by Olsenhaus: Pure Vegan (as well as other fabulous prizes).
For information on how your Organic Diva teen can green her own prom or start a "Teens Turning Green" local chapter, visit www.teensturninggreen.org.
Turning green may also mean turning heads. Word on the street is that Ally will be dancing the night away at her own prom in a beautiful vintage dress compliments of Luca Luca. (It will put your Jessica McClintock Gunne Sax dress to shame. Thank goodness there is no video evidence of that one, darling...)
Watch Ally and her mom Jill on Bravo's "Housewives of NYC" on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. (CST).
This is Jill Zarin Ally's mom. Thank you so much for your kind words. Ally has a different last name. Her name is Allyson Shapiro. Thanks Jill
